Dolphins Playing to the Music of the Boston Pops
This is a random video of dolphins playing with bubble rings to the music of the Boston Pops. I'm not sure why but I find this fascinating as do approximately six and a half million other people on youtube. Something about a creature that's supposed to have a much smaller brain capacity than ours playing with bubbles set to the music of the Boston Pops is just awe inspiring. And yet no one can explain why.
Theory Number One
Because we find the Boston Pops to be music for a slightly more mature age group we like to laugh at anything completely random when it's set to the music of the Boston Pops. Of course that begs the question, what is the average age of the people who've watched this video as compared to the average age of the people who appreciate the Boston Pops style of music? And assuming the age gap is as wide as we think it is are the Boston Pops really the reason this video is interesting? Or, as I suspect, are the Boston Pops really just the noise in the background of the video of dolphins?
Theory Number Two
The dolphins are the interesting part, not the Boston Pops. So why are the dolphins interesting and not the Boston Pops? Well, I think it's because we, as humans, find all other creatures to be mysterious and therefore fascinating. But then why aren't the Boston Pops fascinating? The Boston Pops are, after all, just as foreign to a lot of us as the minds of dolphins. So then why is it that dolphins are more interesting than the Boston Pops? Is it because we can only hear the Boston Pops, whereas we can see the dolphins and the dolphins are doing something?
Conclusion
We find dolphins more interesting than classical musicians such as the Boston Pops for no logical reason. There is no explanation why we find this video of the Boston Pops music set to dolphins playing with bubble rings so fascinating. I doubt that anyone will ever be able to explain the fascination with dolphins and the music of the Boston Pops put together to me. So I shall have to be content watching this highly amusing video of dolphins playing with bubble rings set to the music of the Boston Pops and John Williams and never understanding why I find it so very entertaining.
